slayr is fast, bright, and deliberately playful — major-key melodies over drums picked for sparkle instead of weight, sitting somewhere around 139 bpm. it is the opposite instinct to opium's cold, blown-out low end. and more than almost any other underground style, it lives or dies on selection: the same pattern with the wrong drums is just a fast trap beat.
that is the whole thesis. you are not going to sound-design your way into slayr — you are going to pick your way there. so this walks the four decisions that actually matter: tempo, drums, the melodic layer, and the low end. every sound below is playable here, so you can hear the difference rather than take my word for it.
start with tempo.
slayr runs fast. across the slayr-tagged loops on rooot that carry a tempo, the middle 50% sits between 128 and 148 bpm, and the median lands at 139.
the band matters more than the exact number. under about 125 the bounce goes flat and you drift into plugg territory; past about 150 the hats stop swinging and it turns into rage. starting from nothing, set 140 and build — the most forgiving spot in the range, fast enough to feel weightless, slow enough that the drums still breathe.
one caveat, because it is worth being straight about it: tempo is tagged on loops and stems, and not on every one of them — so that median comes from the 59 slayr-tagged loops that carry a tempo, not the whole catalog. a real signal, not a census.
